It is generally thought that attractive male traits are positively correlated with dominance (aggressiveness). However, growing evidence suggests that this is not necessarily the case. We investigated whether calling song, a male mating display used by females to evaluate potential mates in a field cricket (Gryllus integer), is correlated with aggressiveness. In this species, females prefer males with longer durations of singing time. We measured singing time by measuring song over three continuous days using a custom-designed audio-monitor and assessed aggressiveness by pairing males in agonistic interactions. Our results showed that for males caught in the field, the percentage of time spent singing was negatively correlated with aggressiveness. However, in males that were raised in the laboratory, the percentage of time spent singing was not correlated with aggressiveness. Since calling duration is an attractive male trait in these crickets, our data show that the attractiveness of males can be either negatively related to aggressiveness (field) or unrelated to aggressiveness (lab). Neither of these results fit the traditional view that preferred male mating cues should be positively correlated with dominance (aggressiveness). These results also suggest that measurements of aggressiveness made in the lab do not necessarily correspond with aggressiveness in the field.  相似文献

The mixing efficiency of a plume in a filling box and an emptying-filling box is calculated for both transient and steady states. The mixing efficiency of a plume in a filling box in an asymptotic state is 1/2, independent of the details of this state or how the plume is modelled. The mixing efficiency of a plume in an emptying-filling box in steady state is \(1 - \xi \), where \(\xi = h/H\), the depth of the ambient layer h normalised by the height of the box H. A deeper mixed layer therefore corresponds to a higher mixing efficiency. These results shed light on the interpretation of mixing efficiencies of open and closed systems.

A first‐of‐its‐kind wetland restoration project was completed in October 2000 to treat trichloroethene‐(TCE‐)impacted groundwater from a former manufacturing facility prior to discharge into a highly valued recreational surface water body in the upper Midwest. This article summarizes the design, construction, operation, and effectiveness of the restored wetland. The groundwater‐surface water discharge zone at the site was restored as a wetland to improve the natural degradation of TCE and subsequent degradation by‐products. For the past 11 years, the treatment wetland performance was evaluated by monitoring the wetland vegetation, wetland hydraulics, and water chemistry. Water quality data have been used to assess the wetland geochemistry, TCE and TCE‐degradation by‐product concentrations within the wetland, and the surface water quality immediately downgradient of the wetland. The treatment wetland has been performing according to design, with TCE and TCE‐degradation by‐products not exceeding surface water criteria. The monitoring results show that TCE and TCE‐degradation by‐products are entering the treatment wetland via natural hydraulic gradients and that the geochemistry of the wetland supports both reductive dechlorination (anaerobic degradation) and cometabolic degradation (aerobic degradation) of TCE and TCE‐degradation by‐products: cis‐ and trans‐1,2‐dichloroethene and vinyl chloride. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The updated SAPRC-07 mechanism was evaluated against data from experiments performed in the CSIRO smog chamber. The mechanism predictions have been compared to experimental results as well as predictions by SAPRC-99.Experiments were performed using either toluene or m-xylene in the presence of NOx at sub-0.1 ppmv concentrations. For the majority of m-xylene experiments, the modelled Δ(O3–NO) concentration was within 20% of observed values for both SAPRC mechanisms. However during the oxidation of toluene the production of radicals was poorly predicted, with final Δ(O3–NO) concentration under-predicted by up to 60%. The predictions of major oxidants from isoprene oxidation were in good agreement with observed values. For the NOx-limited conditions however, the ozone concentration predicted by both mechanisms were under-predicted by approximately 20% in the five experiments tested.The performance of the SAPRC-07 mechanism was also evaluated against twelve evaporated fuel experiments. Two types of evaporative mode experiments were performed: headspace evaporated fuel and wholly evaporated fuel. The major difference was a significantly higher concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons and larger alkane products in wholly evaporated fuels. For headspace evaporated fuel experiments both SAPRC mechanisms were in good agreement with experimental results. For wholly evaporated experiments the average Δ(O3–NO) model error was ?25% with SAPRC-07 compared to less than ?5% for SAPRC-99. Updates to the photolysis data for dicarbonyls, the light source used and the experimental conditions under which these experiments were performed are possible causes for the discrepancy between SAPRC-99 and -07 predictions for wholly evaporated experiments.  相似文献

Although anthropogenic pollutants are thought to threaten reptilian species, there are few toxicity studies on reptiles. We evaluated the toxicity of Pb as lead acetate to the Western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis). The acute lethal dose and sub-acute (14-day) toxicity studies were used to narrow exposure concentrations for a sub-chronic (60-day) study. In the sub-chronic study, adult and juvenile male lizards were dosed via gavage with 0, 1, 10 and 20 mg Pb/kg-bw/day. Mortality was limited and occurred only at the highest dose (20 mg Pb/kg-bw/d). There were statistically significant sub-lethal effects of 10 and 20 mg Pb/kg-bw/d on body weight, cricket consumption, organ weight, hematological parameters and post-dose behaviors. Of these, Pb-induced changes in body weight are most useful for ecological risk assessment because it is linked to fitness in wild lizard populations. The Western fence lizard is a useful model for reptilian toxicity studies.  相似文献

Influence of landfill leachate suspended solids on clog (biorock) formation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Laboratory column tests were performed to evaluate the role of leachate-suspended-solids in clogging a granular material permeated with Keele Valley Landfill leachate. The development of the clog material was a result of biological, chemical, and physical processes occurring within the column. The increase in volatile solids, which contributed to clog development over time, was primarily due to the retention of volatile suspended solids and growth of a biofilm capable of removing acetate, propionate, and butyrate from the leachate. Acetate fermentation was primarily responsible for precipitation of calcium within the column. The precipitated calcium and retention of inorganic suspended solids contributed to the increase in clog inorganic solids. Over the duration of the experiment, 3.7 times more calcium was precipitated in the column (due to acid fermentation) than was retained with inorganic suspended solids. Clogging resulted in a greater than 60% reduction in drainable porosity and a six-order magnitude decrease in hydraulic conductivity. The potential practical implications with respect to pipe cleaning and leachate recirculation were discussed.  相似文献

This article provides a brief review of some of the policy issues facing the Asian region with respect to climate change and its economic consequences. The environmental consequences of Asia's economic rise threaten the future growth of the region. Despite recent economic expansion, Asia will be one of the areas of the world most vulnerable to climate change. While Asia currently contributes moderately to greenhouse gas emissions, the potential for increases in emissions is significant. National and regional policy options, including abatement and adaptation, are examined as strategies for tackling the likely effects of climate change. This study recommends that national initiatives that have no 'regrets' properties be a priority area for further research so that they can be implemented as soon as possible. It is envisaged that in the short to medium term, identifiable no regrets policies can be a useful tool for reducing emissions and vulnerability to climate change in developing regions such as Asia.  相似文献

Reconciling human and non-human use of urban regions to support biological conservation represents a major challenge for the 21st century. The concept of reconciliation ecology, by which the anthropogenic environment may be modified to encourage non-human use and biodiversity preservation without compromising societal utilization, potentially represents an appropriate paradigm for urban conservation given the generally poor opportunities that exist for reserve establishment and ecological restoration in urban areas. Two habitat improvement techniques with great potential for reconciliation ecology in urban areas are the installation of living roofs and walls, which have been shown to support a range of taxa at local scales. This paper evaluates the reconciliation potential of living roofs and walls, in particular highlighting both ecological and societal limitations that need to be overcome for application at the landscape scale. We further consider that successful utilization of living roofs and walls for urban reconciliation ecology will rely heavily on the participation of urban citizens, and that a 'citizen science' model is needed to facilitate public participation and support and to create an evidence base to determine their effectiveness. Living roofs and walls are just one aspect of urban reconciliation ecology, but are particularly important 'bottom-up' techniques for improving urban biodiversity that can be performed directly by the citizenry.  相似文献

We characterise US materials exchanges by means of an exploratory survey, with 63 respondents classified by materials handled, organisation type and implementation strategy. Few respondents handle hazardous materials; instead, most focus on pre-consumer items such as building materials or post-consumer durable goods such as furniture. Non-profit organisations and state/local government agencies predominate in this niche, which fills a gap between ubiquitous for-profit scrap recyclers and used-merchandise stores. There are three distinct implementation strategies: passive listers of materials; active brokers, who become involved in each transaction; and those who take possession of materials for storage and display in a warehouse. Warehouse operations typically have a local focus and a loyal customer base, whereas passive listing services serve larger areas and are undergoing consolidation. Passive listing services appear to be relatively marginal enterprises, although the adoption of Internet technology is improving their viability.  相似文献

Marine fisheries in coastal ecosystems in many areas of the world have historically removed large-bodied individuals, potentially impairing ecosystem functioning and the long-term sustainability of fish populations. Reporting on size-based indicators that link to food-web structure can contribute to ecosystem-based management, but the application of these indicators over large (cross-ecosystem) geographical scales has been limited to either fisheries-dependent catch data or diver-based methods restricted to shallow waters (<20 m) that can misrepresent the abundance of large-bodied fished species. We obtained data on the body-size structure of 82 recreationally or commercially targeted marine demersal teleosts from 2904 deployments of baited remote underwater stereo-video (stereo-BRUV). Sampling was at up to 50 m depth and covered approximately 10,000 km of the continental shelf of Australia. Seascape relief, water depth, and human gravity (i.e., a proxy of human impacts) were the strongest predictors of the probability of occurrence of large fishes and the abundance of fishes above the minimum legal size of capture. No-take marine reserves had a positive effect on the abundance of fishes above legal size, although the effect varied across species groups. In contrast, sublegal fishes were best predicted by gradients in sea surface temperature (mean and variance). In areas of low human impact, large fishes were about three times more likely to be encountered and fishes of legal size were approximately five times more abundant. For conspicuous species groups with contrasting habitat, environmental, and biogeographic affinities, abundance of legal-size fishes typically declined as human impact increased. Our large-scale quantitative analyses highlight the combined importance of seascape complexity, regions with low human footprint, and no-take marine reserves in protecting large-bodied fishes across a broad range of species and ecosystem configurations.  相似文献
